  • Watercolour 101 (evenings)

    Th first of a 4-part series - no prerequisite required

    This course provides a comprehensive introduction to watercolour painting taking inspiration from subjects in nature. Through a series of exercises and projects students will learn about materials, basic colour theory and techniques for applying watercolour paint to paper. Suitable for students just starting the watercolour journey, there will be step by step instruction throughout each session.

    Watercolour One is the first course of a 4-part series and is a recommended prerequisite for the follow-on Watercolour Two, Three and Four.

    10 June - 1 July 2025

    Days/Times: Tuesdays 6pm - 9pm

    Venue: NatureArt Lab, M16 Artspace,
    21 Blaxland Crescent, Griffith, ACT

    This course continues the exploration of painting with watercolour looking at harmony in colour and combination of techniques. Students will learn how to stretch paper and will complete a series of exercises and projects based on themes from nature. We will look at monochromatic, complementary and analogous colour schemes and will gain practice combining wet and dry techniques with transparent glazing. Watercolour Two is a recommended/prerequisite for the follow-on Watercolour Three and Four.

    Prerequisites/level: Suitable for 16+ ages, beginners who have completed Watercolour ONE and those wanting to revise their practice.

  • Native Florals in Watercolour

    Learn all about watercolour paints as a medium for capturing the essence of beautiful native flora to produce a loose, intuitive watercolour painting. 

    12 - 26 June 2025

    Days/Times: Thursdays 6pm - 9pm

    Venue: NatureArt Lab, M16 Artspace,
    21 Blaxland Crescent, Griffith, ACT

    This three-week course will cover the basics of working loosely with watercolour medium and building familiarity with colour and equipment choices. You will complete a series of flower paintings using different techniques to build confidence with the watercolour medium. We will be using different brushes to create different floral effects, colour combinations and palettes for dynamic or vintage representation of floral subjects. We will explore composition of floral arrangements for art. Classes will be based on flowers from your own garden or those provided by your tutor for each session. 

  • Fun with Watercolour - Native Paper Daisies


    Spend a few hours learning all about painting paper daisies in this fun and relaxed workshop!

    Suitable for students with some watercolour experience - intermediate level students. 

    This course is suitable for any nature enthusiast aged 16+. 

    About the tutor
    Karen Holloway is an award-winning Canberra based botanical and mixed-media artist with a background in design and applied science. She combines her love of nature, patterns and surface decoration with keen observation honed by many years working as a paper conservator to create fresh, loose artworks with a vintage sensibility.

    Karen is an enthusiastic advocate for using art and observation to connect with nature regardless of age or skill level. She encourages students to enjoy investigating different techniques and mediums to embrace the beauty of nature and explore their own passion for the natural world. Karen is currently undertaking professional studies for a Masters of Art Therapy and the benefits of art for human well-being.
